Context The Catalogue was used to co-create plans for urban regeneration in three European Cities.

The URBiNAT project demonstrated how nature-based interventions can revitalise social housing neighbourhoods, ensuring that climate resilience is inextricably linked to social cohesion and the building of collective awareness. The project focused on intervention areas within seven European cities - including Porto, Nantes, and Sofia - using the "Healthy Corridors" framework.

The development of URBiNAT Catalogue of nature-based solutions (NBS) was led by IAAC to provide project’s pilots with a tool that support the co-creation process of their urban regeneration projects, in particular for the creation of Healthy Corridors. It was conceived as a reference tool for municipalities, follower and observer cities, communities, stakeholders, researchers and practitioners seeking to use nature-based solutions in urban regeneration.

URBiNAT’s approach goes beyond conventional NBS repositories by combining material and immaterial solutions. This expanded understanding of NBS supports not only physical transformation, but also citizens empowerment, social cohesion, democratic innovation, and new forms of collective care for public space.

The resource in a nutshell A catalogue of 40 solutions that citizens can co-select and co-create according to their needs, aspirations, and local environmental conditions.

URBINAT NBS Catalogue supports inclusive urban design by transforming abstract nature-based solutions into a tangible, searchable toolkit. To address the multifaceted nature of urban environments, the resource utilises a categorized approach spanning Territorial, Technological, Participatory, and Social & Solidarity Economy solutions:

  • Territorial: Interventions focused on urban biodiversity, resilience, and storm-water management.
  • Technological: Solutions utilising advanced materials, digital fabrication and ICT systems for monitoring.
  • Participatory: Strategies to operationalise resident knowledge through dialogue with technical experts.
  • Social & Solidarity Economy: Opportunities to shift economic relations toward cooperation and solidarity rather than pure profit.

The 40 solutions included in the catalogue therefore span from NBS such as 3d printed vertical gardens or watercourse restoration, to co-creation approaches such as community workshops or forum theatre.

Several information is available for each solution, such as difficulty of implementation, payback time; innovation aspects; replication and scalability; best practices and references.

The catalogue is available both as an online tool and as a pdf. The online tool enables users to select solutions according to their impact on Nature, Wellbeing, Health, Mobility, Participation, and Economy. These filters empower users to co-select NBS that align with specific local environmental conditions and social aspirations.

The Urbinat project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 under grant agreement No 776783
